Even better, the apparent Soviet acceptance of the UN's decisions in the case suggested that the new organization was not doomed as many had feared. In 1992, Professors Weaver and Wilhoit conducted another national survey of journalists, and noticed the group had moved farther to the left. The conservative is a person who considers very closely every chance, even the longest, of "throwing out the baby with the bath-water," as the German proverb puts it, and who determines his conduct accordingly.

His work has had less bearing on political problems than has that of his two associates, so we now turn to their formulations.

The major exception to this trend is among self-identified conservatives: 51 percent of conservatives believe that President Obama’s political perspective is “liberal,” indicating a strong disconnection between their own perspectives and those of the president. The truth is, there is nothing about godless liberalism that is church-like: there is no holy scripture, no churches or clergy, no cosmology, no higher power, and nothing else that is characteristic of churches.

The liberal belief that human beings are, first and foremost, individuals, endowed with reason, implies that each individual should enjoy the maximum possible freedom consistent with a like freedom for all. Savvy and strategic though Buckley and others in his circle were, it is doubtful that they consciously decided to target intellectuals in order to score populist points. Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights. The whole premise of the liberal woman’s movement was exposed as nothing more than hypocritical liberalism (the double standards principle).

Modern, liberal democracy sounded the death knell for traditional power structures, traditional moral assumptions, and traditional privileges for Christian churches. Roosevelt sided with the insurgents and, after long indecision, decided to run against Taft for the 1912 nomination. S. and allied nations initiated "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to liberate the Iraqi people from the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein. NOTE that liberty is INCONSISTENT with the other goals: the more liberty that is protected, then the less moral or economic order can be established. So citizens and government leaders MUST decide which is the higher priority. You CAN NOT have total liberty with either total moral order or total economic order, so the choice MUST ALWAYS be CONSTANTLY made with EVERY government policy, which receives the higher priority: liberty, or order. Another way this is often phrased is the balance between liberty and justice or virtue. If government requires people to behave with moral virtue (e.g. you cant make, buy, or watch pornography) or to behave with economic virtue (e.g. you must pay your workers a wage they actually can live on) then individual liberty is necessarily restricted. So requiring moral or economic justice is inconsistent with total liberty, which shows again, every policy decision by government must decide which is more important in any given instance: individual liberty, or moral or economic justice and virtue. You MUST make a trade-off between the two; you CANNOT have both to the full degree.

Much in the same way people are raised to be Christians, many Republicans are raised to be conservatives. In general terms, an ideology is an organized collection of ideas, or even more general a way at looking at things in the sense of Weltanschauung. No doubt the natural order can change somewhat to account for changing needs due to gradual human evolution, but it would remain mostly the same. Development of new productive technologies and discoveries of new lands and trade routes contributed to the demise of feudalism.

This has guided the liberal approach to Christianity. They also distrust domestic policing more so than traditional conservatives, and have more leniency for public libertinism. Complex times like these require complex thinkers, and conservative purists like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and all the others who still believe government should play no role in helping us out of this crisis are plainly not complex thinkers. Today's big federal regulatory questions are about sectors where markets are hugely dysfunctional, either inherently or because of inevitable government intervention.

Maybe, just maybe we are supposed to be selfish by nature. But after examining a range of specific municipal-level policy decisions (from the regressiveness of a city’s tax structure to its support for affordable housing), the researchers concluded that in fact, cities’ policies aligned fairly closely with their residents’ ideology. “[C]ities with more liberal populations tend to get more liberal policy…collect more taxes per capita and have substantially higher expenditures per capita….
